Company services

Appoint, change or remove a director or secretary

Adding a director, updating their details or recording a resignation must be reported to Companies House. Answer the questions online and we review and file the right form for you.

Who needs it and when it is due

Tell Companies House when a director or secretary is appointed, stops being an officer, or changes a registered detail such as their name or service address. Companies must notify Companies House within 14 days of the change.

We file for individual and corporate officers: AP01 to AP04 for appointments, CH01 to CH04 for changed details, and TM01 and TM02 for resignations and removals. Who may be appointed is decided by your articles and your board or members. We file the notice, and we do not advise on that decision.

What we file for you

  • Appointment of a director or secretary, individual or corporate
  • Changes to an officer's name, addresses, nationality or occupation
  • Termination of a director or secretary, with the date they left
  • A summary for you to check before it is sent
  • Your company record in your account updated once Companies House accepts it

How soon must I report a change?

Within 14 days of the appointment, change or resignation.

Is a director's home address made public?

A director's service address goes on the public register. The residential address is held by Companies House and is not shown publicly. Choose a service address you are happy to have public.

Do directors need to verify their identity?

Yes. Identity verification is now part of becoming and acting as a director. See our identity verification guide.

Can you decide who to appoint?

No. The decision, and the person's consent, must come from you and the company as its articles require. We prepare and file the notice.

My company was not formed with Sure Formation. Can you still file for it?

Yes. Add the company to your account with its company number and Companies House authentication code, then start the filing from the company page. The authentication code is your proof of authority to file.

Do I need to be signed in?

Yes. Filings are made from your account so your answers, declarations and documents stay private. If you are signed out you are asked to sign in and are then brought back.
